What is the X-Wing Alliance?
X-Wing Alliance (XWA) is an initiative intended to be a centralized community effort and resource for the Star Wars X-Wing tabletop gaming community. This effort is aimed at the continuation of the game system and its organized play activities after the end of development and support from its publisher. Why did you create XWA?
In June 2024 Atomic Mass Games (AMG) announced the ending of game development for X-Wing (and Armada), with limited Organized Play support until the end of the Season (March 2025). XWA’s efforts are aimed at the continuation of the game system and its organized play activities after the end of development and support from its publisher.Who is behind XWA?
XWA is a communal effort, so… we all are behind the XWA! We want this to be community driven. It is by everyone, for everyone. In terms of leaders and initial participants, you’ll already know most of us as tournament organizers, content creators and community contributors that love and support the game. But if you want to pitch in, or you have an idea you want to see, let us know and get involved. The initial leadership Council comprises of Stephen Kim (Discord: @raith), Filippo Bosi (Discord: @Piffo), and Louis Leong (Discord: @louie), supported by a Committee of like minded individuals. (please note that we are using our Discord aliases so you can reach out to us here on the Official X-Wing 2.5 Edition Discord Server!
What is the structure of the XWA? Do the heads of development work independently of the organizers of the XWA?
In addition to the Leadership Council, there are committee positions to handle major work streams and projects. The current structure has a Development Squad that comprises Design, Points and Rules Leads, who work together to adjust the game, under the supervision of the council. There is also an OP Squad that works to promote events and tournaments worldwide, both online and in person. There is also a communications and community outreach Squad. Please note the organization is structured to have an internal system of checks and controls to foster teamwork and bounce ideas off each other.
Are the positions elected? Who participates in the elections?
The XWA structure is defined by the leadership council and its positions are elected internally. XWA members present their expressions of interest for positions and they are voted for their volunteered positions by their peers. We are looking at implementing a structured election process in the near future, that also includes term limits and measures requiring majority votes to pass.Who are the XWA's efforts aimed at?
All players, local community leaders, advocates of the game and content creators at large. In particular for the community leaders, we have a form for you to fill to appear in a centralized database that we will use as initial contact list reference: https://forms.gle/SabPC4ynSvHow does this fit with the game's publisher plans?
The development of X-Wing (and Armada) was announced as “ended” on June 13th 2024. Official organized play support for the game will run until March 2025. XWA aims to pick up where AMG left off in terms of development and adjustments while supporting organized play during and after the current competitive season. To clarify on the outcome of XWA’s activities that players will see: can you give examples of similar continuation committees?
Absolutely. We drew a lot of ideas and inspiration from the work of The NAF with Bloodbowl , Null Signal Games for Android: Netrunner, the SW:CCG Players and the Imperial Assault Continuity Project. What is the scope of XWA?
Primary scopes of the project are:
Maintain, curate and give continuity to the X-Wing game system
Connect players locally and at large with communities.
Promote and foster discussion about the game system
Support players and event organizers in their journey.
Offering a resources and organized play coordination platform
Aggregate media resources and contents with content feeds, supporting creators
Be a platform for player-led initiatives (e.g XTC, Leagues, etc.)
In the longer term, explore other community-building initiatives, such as a unique player ID system that connects and integrates data from already established resources, collating them to present the “profile” of the players (e.g. squad builders, TTT, meta analysis tools).
Is the XWA working with AMG or any large tourney organizers for future events?
Currently XWA is still establishing working structures and detailed plans. At the moment we have not yet made any formal plans with AMG or other major tournament organizers, but are actively pursuing relationships with large tournament organizers for the future. However, We do intend to share progress as it is made and we are open to collaboration with all tournament organizers. Is XWA exclusively dedicated to X-Wing?
XWA aims to support X-Wing. Regardless, we are open to collaboration with other games and communities that could benefit from joint efforts. When will you tell us more?
As we are still establishing our goals and working structures, we don’t have any set timeframes for announcements. However, we do intend to share progress as it is made and ensure that everyone can follow what we are trying to do in a transparent and open way. Longer term, our promise is to communicate clearly and regularly. You can use this discord for XWA announcements. Nick Sperry (Discord: @nicolas_sperry97) is the PR and Communications lead, and is also happy to answer questions you may have. What is the XWA planning to do to reach out globally to assist hard to reach areas?
We are in the process of establishing a community representative role and team, which will help us reach X-Wing communities everywhere, online and in person. We will update on the individuals and structures once we have set it up.How can I help?
Thank you for your enthusiasm! For now, the best thing you can do is continue to promote and play the game. In whatever form or ruleset, keep playing X-Wing, reassure your friends that the game will only get better from here, and when we have a clearer picture of the way forward, come and get involved. If you agree with our mission and want to be a part of it, please reach out via the form below. Please note that the XWA is a working group and not a social space - if you are asked to participate, it will be a lot of work! Here is the link to sign up for future assistance: https://forms.gle/9HU5JnMcoL2BfhJG6
Who is in charge of this?
At the moment we are an aligned group of individuals who have a shared mission. We have asked Filippo Bosi, Louis Leong and Stephen Kim to act as leaders of the XWA to organize the group’s efforts and work towards our goals.
Are you supporting 2.5, reverting to 2.0, supporting Legacy, or developing 3.0?
We support X-Wing and are striving for continuity of the game system. The exact strategy and the best way to do this is currently being worked on. As we work through what the optimal next steps are, we will communicate them to you. The answer to this takes us down a long path, one we will walk carefully and with patience. Are you adjusting 2.5 points? Will they be used at [Location] GT?
Addressing a potential points adjustment is on our agenda, but will not be used at official events in any capacity. Look to September 2024 for public beta points testing!Does the XWA plan to run events concurrently with the current AMG events? (Some GTs scheduled post worlds)
We are still working out what Organized Play support we can offer and will update on our plans in due course. For now, we invite tournament organizers all over the world to reach out if they need support and assistance for their events. How can we get in touch?
We look forward to your continued suggestions and feedback about this initiative. Please fill out the contact form linked below and we’ll note your considerations in the suggestions box and pass them to the relevant people in the team! Keep an eye out for the next updates! Form link: https://forms.gle/SabPC4ynSv. For Prizes, you can reach out to xwaprizes@gmail.comHow often are we hoping to provide updates to points?
We hope to provide the first beta points for open testing by September 2024. After that, points may be tweaked on an ad hoc basis depending on the feedback we receive. Going forward, we anticipate creating at least 2, maybe 3 points rotations per season to keep the meta fresh!
Will we bring content from Extended into Standard (non black box ships)
We will be releasing beta points for all ships and upgrades. Over the longer term (after Adepticon 2025 and pending any future official OP support from Asmodee), we will review the benefits of having a ‘curated’ and a ‘comprehensive’ formats running alongside each other. A ‘curated’ format would have a limited number of ships cycled in and out (similar to the Hyperspace format), while a more "comprehensive" format would have all ships and pilots. This may be subject to change based on design testing! Will we create brand new content? This could be new SL for factions without them, new ships seen in shows (Bad Batch or Ahsoka), or new pilots for existing ships (sort of Hotshots & Aces III)
We know new content is very exciting for players and our Design team have certainly got plenty of ideas for new content, including pilots, ships, scenarios, and game modes. We are taking a measured approach and do not anticipate any new content before Adepticon 2025 at the earliest. We aim to get the game into the right place after testing before moving to more advanced measures for updating X-Wing.Moving forward, it would be cool if Worlds could change locations. (Can we even tease that we would like to run a Worlds type event in the future?) Maybe a change of continent every 2-3 years?
We believe that a vibrant Organized Play calendar and structure is vital to the long term health of X-Wing and will consider all of our options for an annual “Worlds” event. Rest assured that given our vision is for “the largest X-Wing World Championships in 2030”, we consider this question to be at the heart of the XWA’s existence. For now, we are looking forward to the X-Wing World Championships at Adepticon 2025 and hope to see you there!How/when is the “extended beta” testing happening? Can anyone playtest or is it only for that specific team within XWA?
We hope to release the first beta points by September 1st 2024. Our playtest processes are still being worked on, but the open beta will feature a public release that anyone can play, and feedback channels to let us know what your experiences are.Why is the XWA important? Why should communities look to the XWA to help them along their X-Wing journey?
The XWA was formed by some of the most dedicated community members and leaders from around the world, all of whom have devoted significant amounts of time and resources to supporting the X-Wing community at large, on top of their own! We believe that together, we can make this chapter of X-Wing the greatest one yet, and have come together to work on it in a unified and collaborative way.How will the XWA keep its personal beliefs from core members and the best interest of the game separate? How might ego be involved in game decisions?
We knew from the beginning that we were bringing together strong-minded individuals across the spectrum of views for what is “in the best interest of the game” and what “the best version of the game” is.
Every person in the XWA has pledged to set aside personal agendas and act in the interests of the community, and to work together as a team. We have established a vision, a mission statement, guiding principles, clear goals, and a set of values to explicitly state what we are working towards and to which everyone at the XWA is accountable.
No decisions can be made by any single person, whether they are XWA structures, design tweaks, points, or OP plans. Our Squads require three people to agree to any decision, and all Squads work under the supervision of the leadership council (a further three individuals). Elected Squad Leads deliberately stack our teams with people who will challenge each other and provide dissenting opinions and contrasting views, so we reduce blind spots and ensure our suggestions and solutions are as robust as they can be.
We know whatever we do will come under criticism and we can’t please everybody. But we also know that doing nothing will only hasten potential unease. We hope that by going through a robust process, committing to constant internal challenge, and explaining our rationale in a transparent and honest way, we can demonstrate to every X-Wing player that what we are doing has the interests of the game at heart, reflects a diverse set of inputs, is influenced by the feedback we receive, and free from any individual bias or agenda.Does XWA see itself trying to create one master ruleset with other formats, or co-exist with them?
We support X-Wing and are striving for continuity of the game system. The X-Wing community and its subsets offer plenty of opportunities to broaden our X-Wing horizons and make use of our spaceship collection. We welcome and support all game versions of X-Wing, including (but not limited to) co-operative campaigns, multiplayer modes, Epic, single-player modes, 2.0 rulesets, 1.0 rulesets, and any other versions that are based on the core elements of X-Wing. Regardless of what X-Wing flavor you prefer, we are open to collaboration with communities, creators and groups that could benefit from joint efforts. Can we look to use unofficial components like proxies for bases, ships, unofficial dice in the future under the XWA?
This is a great question. While things like our beloved alt-arts will be welcomed, we will defer to TO’s on using custom components like damage decks and obstacles. We strive to make X-Wing accessible, so do not fear, we will not have as intense regulations as we may have seen in the past with OP. For dice, the XWA has begun looking into manufacturers that we can stand by when it comes to new dice to join our collections. We do not plan to allow non-XWA approved or non-official X-Wing dice in XWA events. Once our OP team is formed, we will have more information on future prizing and regulations planned for post-Adepticon 2025 and beyond.Does the X-Wing Alliance affiliate with the other community rules or points efforts, such as but not limited to: Maui or 312 points?
No, the XWA does not affiliate or endorse the alternate points or rulesets created by the community. Maui and Nick (312), for example, are both heavily involved in the XWA's efforts and acknowledge their points had been created to help give the community something fresh to play since the announcement from AMG. Their points are not in any way intended to be seen as a glimpse into the future of XWA points decisions. In their case, both sets of points were released before the X-Wing Alliance was formed. Additionally, the YASB and LBN forks provided to help community building are not direct endorsements from the squad builders. 312 and Maui fully support the upcoming points from the XWA.Will the popular Squad builders like LaunchBayNext and YASB support integrated list building with X-Wing Alliance points?
Yes. Both Stephen (YASB) and Andre (LaunchBayNext) are a part of the X-Wing Alliance. Stephen is currently a member of the Council. We plan on having a list building option alongside AMG OP points. Ie: Standard, Extended, Alliance selections. This structure is subject to change.
